Our series produced in cooperation with the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra continues with this tribute to Art Blakey, one of the great drummers–and an even greater band leader–in jazz history. Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, synonymous with high energy and a strong dose of the blues–served as the launching pad for such greats as Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, Kenny Dorham, Donald Byrd, Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Mulgrew Miller, and many more. This show will be led by Vance Thompson, KJO director and a very fine trumpeter in his own right.
